Beginning with Third Avenue North residence hall, NYU's Office of Residential Life and Housing Services is initiating a system that will send students e-mail notifications when they receive packages, rather than students picking up paper slips from their mailbox. The system may be implemented at Lafayette Street and Founders residence halls next semester, and other dorms next fall.
The WSN Editorial Board has decried the flaws of NYU housing on multiple occasions this semester. But this latest step provides an excellent example of how NYU is actively working to improve student residential life.
The new system, while not a huge change, is a smaller convenience that adds to the overall dorm experience. Housing does have its issues, but this is a pleasant amenity that may help the department's progress toward keeping students in housing.
We also think this should serve as a gateway to a more online-focused housing system. For example, many universities monitor dorm laundry rooms online, giving information about the availability of machines and telling students when their laundry is done. We urge NYU to look into this and other similar practical options.
This change is a positive step toward modernizing housing, and we hope NYU can follow through and strive for more efficient online services.
