I wasn’t able to attend the House Edit meeting the night before the 4.11 piece was written, but had I been there, this piece would have been different.
The throngs of angry demonstrators and TV cameras outside Kimmel Tuesday night indicate that, if nothing else, they’ve certainly hit on a winning strategy for getting publicity by being as crassly (if creatively) provocative as possible, whether or not they contribute anything useful to an understanding of the causes they’re promoting.
No, they don’t. How is hosting a panel composed of an NYU academic (Gillermina Jasso), a Temple Law professor (Jan Ting), and leaders from two civil society groups (Chris Simcox and Enrique Morones) crass or provocative? No, there was only one reason the protesters were there: to villify Simcox and try to prevent him from speaking by shouting him down. If anyone would realize, just for a second, that there were, in fact, other people on the panel beside Simcox who deserved to be recognized, they’d understand that there was actually a serious presentation of policy going on that evening.
If the College Republicans measure the event’s success by the quantity of media coverage and the number of people they pissed off, good for them, but we’re at a loss to explain how the event could be construed as anything more than a petty cry for attention.
Oh, really? Well, allow me: Lets assume that we can tell when someone is “pissed off” about the event if they took the time to actually go down to the Kimmel Center and protest. This means that, by my count, there were approximately 40 or 50 people who got genuinely “pissed off”. Many of the people protesting (or who felt vehemently enough in one direction or another to actually get up and say anything) were not even from NYU anyway. So the maximum estimate for the number of people the NYU CRs pissed off is at most a number between zero and 50. On the other hand, do you think the panelists would have come if they had assumed that this event was going to be anything more than “a cry for attention”? Way to insult the panelists.
The College Republicans aren’t winning any converts on campus with events that trivialize and mock the plight of undocumented immigrants in this country, nor are they impressing us by helping a group of armed vigilantes enter the political mainstream.
Again, which panelist at the event “trivialize[d] and mock[ed]” undocumented immigrants? This House Edit assumes the biases and ignorance of the protesters when it takes as a truth the idea that Minutemen commonly engage in violence and are racists. They don’t. They aren’t. They’re just constantly accused of being so by people who simply want open borders and don’t want to have a serious discussion about immigration policy. Where is the evidence of violence? There is no evidence, only allegations and lore.
By forgoing opportunities to clarify the immigration issue and instead favoring directionless, pointless coverage, the College Republicans are only making themselves look like extremists.
Are the NYU CRs all of a sudden responsible for the quality of the news generated by their event? Are they responsible for Fox News’s prurience? No, the protesters are making the NYU CRs look like extremists.
Moreover, the whole university looks bad when the campus can legitimately be charged with hosting an outspoken bigot. While, in principle, we have no qualms with the College Republicans making fools of themselves, they’re reflecting poorly on the entire student body in the process.
Again, an assumption of the views of the protesters. Is the editorial board OK with just asssuming that Simcox is a bigot based based on the claims of the protesters? Is he not entitled to any believability when he defends himself?
Further, what does the board think about Gillermina Jasso’s use of the term “illegal” when the protesters claim “no one is illegal”? What does the board think about Jan Ting’s conclusion that the best policy to curb illegal immigration is building the border fence - something that is surely more rankling to open-border advocates than the Minutemen? What does the board think about Enrique Morones’ ad-hominem attacks, demogoguery, and refusal to have his views questioned or even listen to Simcox speak - behavior that clearly fed the ire of the protesters just as much as the mere presence of Simcox?
As the notion becomes clear that there were reasonable people on that panel who were advocating serious policies with which the protesters also had problems, the tone and conclusions of the 4.11 house editorial become harder and harder to accept.

People who slander and malign Chris Simcox are ignorant and wrong in their attacks. I have personally met the man and have found him to be a decent kind and respectable American. He has never been aligned with any hate group or extremist organization. In fact he has been a teacher at the Wildwood school in Los Angeles for many years specializing in multicultural education. He respects our laws, our civil liberties, our freedom of religion and most importantly our sovereignty. Our border laws must be respected. It is unaccpetable that illegals are allowed to enter every single day into the U.S. And in response to people who say nobody is illegal, I say, the people who say that are anarchists. What they want is anybody in the world that wants to come here should be able to come here. And they want us to have no quotas. The people who say these things are dangerous extremist leftists. There must a compromise in this issue between both sides. However there should not be an amnesty.
