Ms. Chambers’s plurality quote is a disingenuous defense. The national controversy over illegal immigration focuses on the southern borders of the United States–including a proposal to build a high fence. I’m sure Ms. Chambers and other members of the NYU College Republicans are well aware of those facts.

I agree with Ms. Fried’s contention that, “Racism is a serious and hurtful accusation, and should be made cautiously and only when concrete evidence exists.” Given the national controversy as context for the “game,” the NYU College Republicans surely knew full well that they would be perceived as racist. The group went ahead with it anyway. The only conclusions are that these kids are racist and don’t care about others’ perceptions or they are extremely foolish.

Am I being too charitable in assuming that the NYU College Republicans are not naive, they keep up on the news, they think thoroughly before they act, and take responsiblity for the consequences of their actions?

As for illegal drinking, the arguments that everybody does it and that other states have lower legal drinking ages are irrelevant. This is true especially for people who choose to invoke the law self-righteously, in a manner implying special reverence for it. Or is Ms. Chambers’s invocation simply a ruse to support her own selfish politics and actions?

Ms. Chambers says, “the protesters are implying that there is only one race of immigrants.” If there is any truth in that statement, it is that the protesters believe that there IS ONLY ONE RACE: THE HUMAN RACE. Ms. Chambers, her group, and the political party they represent rarely understand that.
