First of all, in terms of the all-caps issue, refer to this.

I didn’t write a column addressing the immigration event tiff. But if I did, it would have been very similar to what Rachel Fried wrote in today’s opinion section.
She even addresses my buddy “Allergic”:
Many protesters called the event “racist,” and the protest’s Facebook event cited racism as a major reason for speaking out. But nowhere in the “Find the Illegal Immigrant” Facebook event was anything about race or ethnicity mentioned. The accusations of racism were based solely on the Facebook event photo of a sign depicting a group people - one wearing a sombrero - running. To call the College Republicans racists because of the photo is an overreaction. Signs like the one posted actually do exist around the Mexico-U.S. border, where illegal immigration does occur. WSN quoted Chambers: “By calling us racists, the protesters are implying that there is only one race of immigrants,” and there is truth to her argument. Racism is a serious and hurtful accusation, and should be made cautiously and only when concrete evidence exists.
“Allergic” also writes
If “an undergrad (wants) to go to law school, or become a lawyer, [REDUNDANT, ERIC, TAKE YOUR CLARITIN AND PUT ON YOUR GLASSES]or a judge, or study public policy, or do anything else that requires one to care about upholding laws, or even making them in the first place,” that student should respect ALL law. Abstaining from illegal drinking would demonstrate reverence–and even a bit of humility.
Yea, I guess it would - but that still doesn’t stop most undergrads from doing it. Or going on to successful, meaningful lives thereafter. Also, what about states that have different legal drinking ages? Are sloshed undergrads in one state more “reverent” than those in another because of some law?
And, by the way, not everyone who goes to law school becomes a lawyer.
You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
My response to Mr. Moskowitz’s original column and my subsequent response to his answer were based on many reports of the event in media other than WSN. I have never been to the Facebook website and I never saw the photo in question. Ms. Fried’s contention about me is wrong.
Ms. Chambers’s plurality quote is a disingenuous defense. The national controversy over illegal immigration focuses on the southern borders of the United States–including a proposal to build a high fence. I’m sure Ms. Chambers and other members of the NYU College Republicans are well aware of those facts.
I agree with Ms. Fried’s contention that, “Racism is a serious and hurtful accusation, and should be made cautiously and only when concrete evidence exists.” Given the national controversy as context for the “game,” the NYU College Republicans surely knew full well that they would be perceived as racist. The group went ahead with it anyway. The only conclusions are that these kids are racist and don’t care about others’ perceptions or they are extremely foolish.
Am I being too charitable in assuming that the NYU College Republicans are not naive, they keep up on the news, they think thoroughly before they act, and take responsiblity for the consequences of their actions?
As for illegal drinking, the arguments that everybody does it and that other states have lower legal drinking ages are irrelevant. This is true especially for people who choose to invoke the law self-righteously, in a manner implying special reverence for it. Or is Ms. Chambers’s invocation simply a ruse to support her own selfish politics and actions?
Ms. Chambers says, “the protesters are implying that there is only one race of immigrants.” If there is any truth in that statement, it is that the protesters believe that there IS ONLY ONE RACE: THE HUMAN RACE. Ms. Chambers, her group, and the political party they represent rarely understand that.
