As NYU continues to expand globally, it is making strides to bring its campuses together: Select courses this semester will use videoconferencing technology to connect classes on different campuses.

These courses, dubbed Global Network Seminars, will use the technology to combine certain classes at NYU's campuses in London, Florence and Ghana up to six times a semester.

Ulrich Baer, NYU's vice provost for globalization and multicultural affairs, said students will use the conference sessions to discuss topics relating to their classes and locations and will complete shared assignments.

"Students can carry out analogous research projects in two distinct locales and compare their findings, adjust their research methodologies, and learn about a comparative perspective firsthand," Baer said.

Among the Global Network Seminars are the Liberal Studies Program's Cultural Foundations and Social Foundations courses.

According to Cultural Studies professor Afrodesia McCannon, this new technology will help globalize students' education.

"It makes [students] more international without going overseas," McCannon said.

McCannon's class recently had its first videoconference session. Students participated in a seminar discussion of an ancient Mesopotamian poem, "The Epic of Gilgamesh."

Those in the Steinhardt class "Health and Society" are also participating in the program. Students from the Washington Square campus and the NYU in Ghana campus share case studies and data from both locations through videoconferencing.

Students say they are excited about this new initiative that connects NYU's various campuses across the globe.

"I definitely think this will benefit me," said LSP freshman Meghan Offtermatt, who is in McCannon's class. "We get to interact with the complete opposite side of the world."
