Times Square has officially entered the wireless age.

The Times Square Alliance, an organization that works to improve and promote Times Square, began offering free public Internet access for droves of visitors on Tuesday, joining with Yahoo to provide Wi-Fi in the area.

Wireless Internet is the latest in a series of new initiatives for Times Square, which was transformed this year with the partial closure of Broadway, a new seating area and more pedestrian walkways.

"There's entertainment outside. The Wi-Fi is just one more thing to improve the experience," Times Square Alliance Director of Communications Minerva Martinez said.

The connection extends from 42nd to 44th streets along Broadway, 46th to 47th streets along Broadway, and Duffy Square.

NYCwireless, an organization that aspires to expand free, wireless Internet in NYC, initially helped the Times Square Alliance in the early stages of acquiring a wireless network, but the new Wi-Fi in the area is not associated with NYCwireless, said Dana Spiegel, executive director of NYCwireless.

"I think more and more people are discovering the Broadway plaza and how comfortable it is," Martinez said.

Tisch freshman Sam Ogilvie said he thinks people will see Times Square as a place to go to hang out now, rather than just a place to go for a Broadway show.

"I think if they have Wi-Fi there, there will probably be more people in that area," he said.

As if Times Square doesn't already have enough people?

I don't understand who would take the time to come with their laptop to Times Square to get any work done. Bryant Park is one avenue over with free wifi and a better atmosphere with less tourists.
