Fast food has a bad reputation, but the Jamaican chain Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill may buck the trend.

Golden Krust offers tasty food lightning fast at prices that are somewhere between dirt cheap and moderate. Golden Krust's reggae fest combo meals start at $3.79 for a small patty and coco bread and make their way up to $10.49 for a braised oxtail combo. But Golden Krust serves up singular items like beef patties, coco bread and jerk chicken for less than $6.

My friend and I ordered from a cashier who was not the friendliest, but we still received our food before pulling out our money. My friend immediately knew she wanted a veggie patty, coco bread and a ginger soda — her total was a measly $4.76. After I talked myself out of paying for a pricey $10 meal, I decided to go with a plate of a half jerk chicken and a strawberry kiwi squeeze for $7.83.

Once I uncovered my chicken, steam poured out of the box. I opted to use my hands instead of the fork provided once I saw the tender, juicy chicken slide off the bone. My mouth exploded with an unexpected, yet delightful, heat. The dry rub of paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and ground pepper was a great addition to the already flavorful chicken.

Although I originally regretted not getting any side dishes, once I saw the amount of chicken that was given for $5.49, I knew I made the right decision.

Even though Golden Krust has a lot of meat dishes, they have lots of choices for people who don't eat meat, such as spicy veggie patties and soya patties. And if you're craving jerk chicken and porridge in the morning, you're in luck — Golden Krust recently began serving breakfast.

Don't limit yourself to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Golden Krust also offers an array of desserts, including banana cake, chocolate cake, coconut cake, sugar buns, sweet potato pudding and many more.

Because it's fast food, this Caribbean chain doesn't offer a unique menu, which is its downfall; but at least you know you're getting the same hot, delicious food wherever you spot a Golden Krust.

Take that, McDonald's!
