It’s summer…you shouldn’t be reading this

By Anthony Marek

brakez

On behalf of the opinion section, including co-editor Aaron Greenblatt and deputy Eric Bruenner, I would like to acknowledge that the Arts blog is schooling us.

It’s not easy contriving an opinion for all of this stuff, so sometimes you just have to know when to throw in the proverbial towel.

We will be back in August, more opinionated than ever before, I’m sure.

Incidentally, if you’re interested in becoming a contributor or perhaps a weekly (or bi-weekly) columnist, shoot us an e-mail at opinion@nyunews.com with a brief writing sample. Please be an undergrad, and not a hack.

Best wishes for the summer,

Anthony Marek

Time to start picketing!

By Mike Devlin

On Eric Bruenner’s latest column, Bee Fisch commented, “If you are not fired by Saturday, then I will start picketing…”

Well, Bee, it’s time to start picketing.

As opinion editor, I rarely post blog entries to defend my columnists against prickly comments. But I took issue with this one because it makes significant allegations based on an incorrect reading of the column.

Continuing confusion—Help us out, Writing the Essay grads

By matt buchanan

Safire
I continue to be confused by the reaction to Rachel Kreiter’s piece, or more specifically, the assertion that the piece was pointless. I know this might surprise many of the commenters from NY and NJ, but a lot of us are from outside of the tri-state region, and the linguistic token she refers to is initially jarring, if not outright annoying. Therefore, the piece is relevant within the context of NYU as a national university (though it’s trying to be that global thing) that draws students from all over the country. Calling all Writing the Essay graduates

By Mike Devlin

Reading feedback on “Words are Cheap,” Rachel Kreiter’s column, is one of my greatest pleasures as opinion editor. I never expected a column on language to be so controversial. I’m glad that it is, because people are clearly reading it — as I write this, “Either get in line or online; people ‘on line’ are stupid” is the most popular article on the WSN website.

But that’s not why I’m loading this blog entry into a vacuum tube and broadcasting it to the internets. I want to address this comment, from “Ali”:

Why do you have a column in the WSN? Is there really that much of a shortage for column writers? You’re a disgrace, go back to Writing the Essay.

WSN OPINION: THE BLOG.

By Mike Devlin

Opinion columnists have a lot to say. That’s why we ride about willy-nilly on our newsprint hobby-horses, flailing enemies with bruising words. The Washington Square News opinion staff has decided to give you more words, but these will be slung from hobby-horses made with the vacuum tubes of the internet, not newsprint. So welcome to the WSN Opinion Blog, and prepare to be wowed by our deftly selected words.

Columnists will contribute regularly to this blog. We hope that it becomes a way for readers to interact with those fuzzy headshots they see in WSN each week. And they will also react to each other. You’ll see Colonel Bloomington-Smythe QC plunge his gleaming bayonet into Eric Bruenner’s cocoa butter-slick chest. Rachel Kreiter might catch a stray “roflcopter” in a Matt Buchanan post and use her language superpowers to skewer his confidence on a stick. You never know with WSN Opinion. We’re a wild bunch.
