Despite its freewheeling degeneracy, “South Park” does have rules to follow. Much like you would expect “The Boondocks” to eventually tackle BET and “Cribs,” so too can you wait faithfully with the realistic hope that “South Park” will address the Stupid White Elephant of today, or at least yesterday. Because that’s what it does–every season, it glances at the newspaper with a sigh and sets out on a methodical journey through the twisting, obvious hills of pop culture embarrassment. Sometimes it approaches either brilliance or hilarity (or both) in the process; either way, unless it gets caught in a self-masturbatory swamp like last season’s “Imaginationland” trilogy, it’s going to keep chugging along until it gets to everything.
And so we come to the WGA strike, which naturally feels like a stale target since everyone stopped caring about it two weeks in, despite its featuring some of the cleverest signs since the Limerick Composers’ Strike of 1882. The WGA is replaced, in this episode, with Canada (still inexplicably called the WGA, just in case you aren’t picking up the subtle references), who collectively decide, under the leadership of hyperactive asshole Stephen Abootman, that they want more money. Specifically, some of that “internet money” that’s floating around nowadays. So they strike, and it is an exercise in gruesome futility, and eventually they just settle for anything to make it seem like less of a humongous waste (”anything” being, of course, bubble gum and Bennigan’s coupons). Meanwhile the boys, being the only people on God’s green earth who care about our languishing neighbors to the north (and really only because of Terrance & Phillip reruns), decide to try and make some of that “internet money” themselves, putting Butters in a degrading but somehow hypnotic music video on YouTube. It cannot be adequately described, though I suppose the literalists will merely tell you that he’s offering anal sex against a colorful background. I, for one, think it has profound implications beyond its modest form–for one thing, the fact that we are not told “what what” is precisely “in the butt” indicates the entropic confusion of this tortured lad, who is probably yearning to latch onto something tangible and solid in the endless garbage vortex of the Information Age. David Foster Wallace calls it “Total Noise”–and really, is YouTube anything but that?
Anyway, the boys, having experienced the hollow thrills of Internet success, quickly find themselves in some sort of bureaucratic purgatory where “theoretical dollars” are handed out to all those Internet memes we forgot about five minutes ago. They are not a pleasant bunch; among the dubious pleasures of this episode is a gory melee between such vapid oddities as “Tron Guy,” “Leave Britney Alone Guy,” and that sneezing panda.
The point of all this, articulated rapidly at the end by Stan, is that the strikers were fools for believing that they could squeeze money out of a medium that is both nascent and largely dominated, for the moment, by a culture of indulgent, transient stupidity. Okay, “South Park,” I’ll buy it. But next time you tell me something intelligent, make it thread throughout the entire episode, even if you shout it at the top of your lungs. You broadcast two messages up until the last 3 minutes of this episode: a) that people are foolishly greedy; and b) that YouTube is full of cancerous, perverted narcissism. I’m enough of a misanthrope already–that’s largely why I’m watching “South Park” in the first place. I suspect that most of “South Park’s” viewership already know, thanks to the reliable cynicism of their shriveled black hearts, that the WGA strike and YouTube contain (or contained) equal parts bullshit and evil–and if they don’t, well, Lewis Black’s “Root of All Evil” can always bludgeon them into epiphany*. Use your filthy podium wisely, “South Park.” It really is one-of-a-kind.
*note: I’d watch Patton Oswalt and Greg Giraldo even if they were contestants on “Rock of Love.”
