Was that an Eliot Spitzer jab at the end? I see what you did there, “South Park.”
Like any respectable “South Park” episode (and by “respectable” I do mean “worthy of our respect,” though the show would, for all that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone care, be perfectly content to have us shove our respect elsewhere), this one brayed its message with a filth-encrusted megaphone. Was it a good message? “Drugs are bad, m’kay, but because of human nature they’re worse if they’re criminalized, m’kay.” That’s the jist of it. Not particularly insightful or avant-garde, but “South Park” has always smugly paraded a rather moderate libertarianism, which it tries to pass off as the “voice of reason” by funneling it through the cherubic mouths of the boys. Because, you know, all the adults in “South Park” are either deluded, moronic, or evil.
But anyway, if the ideology ends up lukewarm (which happens nowadays, especially when the show talks politics), we always have several delightful layers of tasteless smut to fall back on for our viewing pleasure, and this episode was filled to the brim with the kind of intricately-crafted lowbrow-that-isn’t-really-lowbrow-because-it’s-so-ridiculous that we’ve come to expect and crave. The narcotics issue is tackled by introducing “cheesing”–for the uninitiated masses, that’s getting high off cat pee. All the kids are doing it! Especially Kenny, whose cat pee addiction sends him to a hilarious hallucinogenic fantasy world where pretty much everything is shaped like breasts. How does the town, led by Kyle’s dad, deal with this crisis? By outlawing cats, of course, prompting Cartman to set up shop as the Oskar Schindler/Paul Rusesagabina of the feline oppressed, harboring them in his attic. That part would be wonderfully ironic, were not its irony pointed out by the show itself later on, in a rare bit of bad comic judgment. Oh well. For those wondering why Kyle’s mom isn’t doing the crusading–well, it’s been done before, and she needs to play the Silda Spitzer role later on when Gerald is exposed as a massive, pee-stained hypocrite. Lessons (libertarian lessons) are learned; life goes on. But honestly, even if the satire wasn’t exactly razor-sharp this week, one cannot overemphasize the elemental hilarity of Kenny’s boob world, which has been lovingly rendered like a grainy episode of “He-Man.” However frivolous it may be, when “South Park” (of all shows) goes to the trouble of coming up with such an elaborate sight-gag, we are compelled to acknowledge its greatness.
