Live: Justice at Terminal 5 (10/20/07)

By Elizabeth Yoo

What can be said of Justice that hasn’t already been mentioned in blogs?

There’s something inherently lame about watching people play music on their laptops, but Justice had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Their live set included an intense light show, and even though they constantly flashed blinding white lights directly into the crowd, the audience didn’t even flinch and just kept dancing.

Of course, this was not the audience’s first reaction. It is disheartening to see how many people whipped out their cameras when Justice first came onstage, desperate to get a shot of the two gents rather than enjoy the music. It just emphasized the passivity of the audience as simple witnesses rather than active concertgoers.

Luckily, the “gotta get a picture for my blog” reaction didn’t last long. Part of this is because of the efforts of the Terminal 5 security to stop the picture-taking, but it also shows how effective Justice are at getting people to dance and enjoy their electronic jams. The crowd soon wholeheartedly let loose as Justice’s tracks blasted out of massive speakers that took up most of the space on stage. The reaction when the DJs played “We Are Your Friends” was exhilarating, with everyone in the crowd shouting the lyrics right back at the two men who produced such an undeniably memorable track. Just when it seemed like the crowd could not get more excited, this song proved that they could.

This one song is so powerful that after the show ended and the house lights had gone up, people still wanted more and once again started chanting the lyrics to “We Are Your Friends.” After the show, this zealous enthusiasm spilled out onto the streets as kids cheered on a couple of audience members who drove away blasting the song.

On a side note, it was surprising to see one of the members smoking on stage. This only proves that it’s okay to break a city law as long as you’re a much-hyped, badass French DJ who just wants to make the kids happy.
